Entertainment Guru and Artiste Manager, Mr. Logic has stated that there is a difference between the reggae genre and the dancehall genre, and in any case, they shouldn’t be fused.
Speaking on Hitz FM on the Daybreak Hitz show, Mr. Logic urged the board of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards not to combine the two genres in one category.
He said that musicians in the reggae fraternity are always overshadowed by the dancehall musicians in award schemes, making it difficult for them to be recognized and win awards for their works.
In his own words, he said; The genre has been struggling. There are people who do reggae and not dancehall. Once you combine the two then you become confused. But you could have added ‘Reggae song and Dancehall song of the Year’.
He cited an example using Reggae artiste, Nii Lantey by saying that he has been ignored in the award scheme due to the overshadowing of the dancehall musicians.
Nii Lamptey didn’t get a nomination because the dancehall overshadows all the reggae musicians. It’s causing a lot of problem. We have Afrobeats and Afropop already.
VGMA is a senior scheme they should set the pace. We don’t want it combined together. We have Adina, Samini and Kahpun… if you give it to Adina then they will complain. Once you have the two… they take it and everyone is quiet. They should look into that part it’s very important, he added.
However, the nominees for the Best Reggae/Dancehall Artiste of the year at the upcoming VGMA are, Epixode, Samini, Larruso, Kaphun, and last year’s winner, Ras Kuuku.
