According to Johns Hopkins University, the global death toll from the Covid-19 pandemic has reached three million people.
The achievement comes just one day after the World Health Organization’s (WHO) director-general cautioned that the world was “approaching the highest rate of infection” in history.
On Saturday alone, India, which is experiencing a second wave, reported more than 230,000 new cases.
Since the outbreak, nearly 140 million cases have been recorded.
On Friday, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus warned that “cases and deaths are continuing to rise at alarming rates.”
“Over the past two months, the number of new cases each week has nearly doubled globally,” he said.
